Penguins Arena / General Discussion / Re: is penguins arena losing steam?

Well to be frank there isn't that much depth to the game, or replay value in comparison to say, The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. One solution could be the implementation of a more user friendly user content creation kit. For small games like this, making the developer tools available in an easy-to-use form to the public can make for a huge success and longevity of the game. Just look at Dink Smallwood from RTsoft... I picked the game up in 1998. It's a pretty lousy game in all aspects, added nothing new to the genre and was rather plain - but the website was updated in 2006, the forums are still active and there's even people working on a port to other platforms. Why? The way I see it, the game in itself was nothing more than a base for the community to continue building upon. I haven't played it for seven or eight years, but gee, maybe there's something to learn from that one. Here's hoping for more good games from Frogames - cheers!

also it wont work Dude 304 jr It's a promotion code that you use when you sign up for a new account, it's not a registration number (which is what you get once you have signed up). So you just put it in the field for "Coupon Code" at the registration page located here. Fill it in, click recalculate, and the discount will be displayed.

No matter, found out that I could use some of the glacier objects to achieve a similar look. Got my first map somewhat done, having a peek at the official maps to check what's missing to make it fully playable.
How's the patch coming along? :)

You can't create customs objects, I'm not sure will work on that as it'll make the project a lot more complex.
Been struggling to create bridges of ice that run over the water, but I realized that it would require a custom object, yes? The terrain editor gives you a single "sheet of paper", more or less, to raise and lower, but not to fold if you catch my drift. What I want(ed) to do was to add another piece of paper in the terrain editor and fold it to make it run from one platform to another, yet leaving a gap between the ice bridge and the water. Like this: Is it possible to "add sheets" to accomplish this, or would it require objects?

Well this was a welcome addition alright! Played around with it for a while, didn't come up with anything truly playable but it was good fun toying with. Reminiscent of the Aurora toolkit for Neverwinter Nights hehe. Got a few ideas that I'll attempt to realize in the next few weeks, and already begun trying to recreate an old favourite scenario of mine. How's the patch coming along? Ps. I demand a Cocoa/Carbon stylized interface! Bloody Windoze 95 looks irks me!

Another thing that would be nice, is if one could be a dedicated host on a Mac, and an option to have a greeting message for new players that join the server. Since it's drop-in games, perhaps an option to disable the score table completely from start? I know you can reset the list, just brainstorming a bit...

There is a way to establish a dedicated host on your own PC if you run Windows, but apparently not if you have a Mac sadly. I've had a couple of good matches against two or three other paying players, at best I ended up even in matches won. Sadly if I try to join a Demo server the host leaves two of three times when he notices I got the full game. Haven't seen that bug you're talking about, but sometimes my penguin slides across the map at start and drops into the water before the countdown is finished. I also noticed that you can throw a first snowball and jump up and down before the countdown ends as well. The game is a bit unpolished and there are certainly improvements to it that should be made, such as the ones in the "Ideas" thread. According to this post by Cristophe though they'll be adding more content to the game until the end of january though: we released Penguins Arena only 2 weeks ago, and the 3 next months will see more content added to the game. ...

By the way, if you're into the whole pollution thing, why not make a map with a collided oil tanker, with spilled oil all about? Add a slowing property or something to oil puddles and people will avoid them like a plague and perhaps think a bit about it. Standing in the oil would make them easy targets.

Capture the FlagI'll second the idea about a Capture the Flag mode with symmetrical maps (preferrably larger than the current ones of course), it'd be plain awesome. Map editorWould be totally sweet. RankingsNot a big deal, but a simple frag list like previously suggested would be nifty. Displayed at the end of each round. Player namesOther than that I'd like to see player names above the heads, and preferably that all text that is displayed without background (only the current player name display beneath team icons as far as I know for now) to have a white border or something around them. It makes it way more legible if you'd look up into the sky on the map "Aurora Borealis" for example. It also makes it look like a more solid game. Register online nameWould be nice to be able to register your own name for online play, together with a password. No need for a huge rankings database, just so that you can have an identity of your own when playing online. Black penguinsHur yeah. With a trenchcoat and sunglasses á la Deus Ex. :>

Bonjour, not sure but I believe this thread is about the fullscreen mode crash on MacBook Pro? Any chance of getting a translation of how to fix it? If it isn't about the same error that I encounter, well, I can only run the game in windowed mode, else it would crash once the loading of "Objects" has finished. Help much appreciated, bloody addictive game that I'd like to buy, if it'd work in fullscreen for me. Regards, Thoht
